Rain Water Collector
Description:
Many people live without access to a clean water source. Rain water, if caught and stored properly, can provide potable water, lessening the disease burden create by water-borne illnesses.
Instructions:
Begin by fusing 4 layers of plastic (either 4 bags opened completely or 2 bags folded in half layered directly on top of each other). Make several of the 4 layered plastic until you have enough pieces to achieve the needed size.
Lay the pieces next to each other with about an inch of overlap. Fuse the pieces together. When you have fused the pieces to the desired size, fuse 2-4 additional layers over the the whole work to secure the joins and give added strength.
For the spigot, use the mouth of a milk or soda bottle. Make a hole in the middle of the plastic that is slightly smaller than the spigot. Remove the cap and push through the hole until it snaps through, leaving a tight seal. Replace the cap.
To hang, cut or put a small hot poker through each corner, about 1 inch from either edge. Thread an i-cord or another piece of rope through the holes and hang up to catch rainwater. When it is full of water, use undo the cap on the spigot to collect the water without needing to take it down!
